Title: Earth’s Bump

Artist Statement:

“Did your mom have this many stretch marks...?” ⁣

“No..” ⁣

My heart dropped as a nurse asked me that today. No follow up question. Just curiosity. ⁣I wasn’t hurt, it just made me stop.

I sometimes get stuck on the thought of what this body will look like after my baby is born as I wake up each morning with new marks. I mean, I’ve gained 50lbs- for which I’m grateful for and was much needed, but I guess I can’t be surprised when my skin looks like it has been through A LOT. ⁣

I find SO MUCH connection looking at this arch that has a hole in the middle of her- as if she used to carry a baby as well. ⁣

I wonder if this arch misses her original form, perhaps like I suspect I will postpartum. Maybe she misses that form of her younger self that was a part of the red rock - flatter - safer - stronger - more stable. ⁣

And then she peers out and sees thousands of people each year coming to see her. “Me?” she thinks, “But I’m old. I’m broken. They literally call me DELICATE ARCH. You should have seen me in my younger days! I was so strong and I didn’t have this gaping hole in me.” ⁣

But then she listens. And hears people say how she is evidence that God exists. ⁣

And maybe then she realizes that through 𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 and 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞, she has become a masterpiece of God’s artistic hands. (And aren’t all masterpieces delicate after all?)⁣

I guess we all have to give way to some erosion- physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, for His light to shine through us. Even if it leaves us with a gaping hole in our bodies or very soul. ⁣

And that gaping hole that seems to be a symbol of what was lost is actually a reminder of what was eroded- not to take away but to transform. To make way for his rays. ⁣

And maybe we all are meant to become a little more delicate. Fragile. As all masterpieces are.
