This week culminated in a big exhibition in the Casino of the week's work. It was a huge amount of work to bring ready made frames, art materials, etc. over to the island on the ferry and then to get around in a golf cart to find places to paint. Two paintings a day was the regimen in order to have enough pieces that would compete well with all the other artist's excellent work. There were large crowds of art collectors that came so that doubled the pressure.\u003cbr\u003eThis painting took two sessions because it required more precise drawing to draw the boats and the building. The boats were moving up and down and back and forth, with the little waves in the harbor and it required so much intense concentration that I thought I was hurting physically from the effort. To take on this kind of thing, means that the artist has to be very confident and something of a gambler besides. It also means that controlled, but decisive, boldness is the order of the day. It might seem simpler to paint from a photograph but-- it was against the rules-- and from an artist's viewpoint, any photograph would lack the important things that only a human eye can see. Plus, you can't beat the atmosphere of actually being there and staring at something for hours at a time.
